HERBS: Treat yourself to fresh herbs right from your garden! The difference when home grown is impressive! All are excellent for adding distinctive flavor to meat, and fish dishes, gravies, soups, salads and vegetables. They are fun to grow and make an attractive garden addition!

Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), a native of India, is widely used in Thai and Vietnamese cooking. Lemon grass is a perennial, which means once you plant it, the grass comes back year after year. Depending on the area you live in the plant will go dormant in the winter. In harsh climates the plant will need to be potted and wintered indoors. This aromatic herb is used in Caribbean and many types of Asian cooking and has become very popular in the United States. Most of the commercial crops for the United States are grown in California and Florida. Lemon grass is also used for medicinal purposes. It is hardy in zones 7-11. In colder areas bring inside as a houseplant in the winter.

Culinary Uses
This is a very pungent herb and is normally used in small amounts. The entire stalk of the grass can be used. The grass blade can be sliced very fine and added to soups. The bulb can be bruised and minced for use in a variety of recipes. The light lemon flavor of this grass blends well with garlic, chilies, and cilantro. The herb is frequently used in curries as well as in seafood soups. It is also used to make tea.

Medicinal and Other Uses
This grass is rich in a substance called citral, the active ingredient in lemon peel. This substance is said to aid in digestion as well as relieves spasms, muscle cramps, rheumatism and headaches. Lemon grass is also used commercially as the lemon scent in many products including soaps, perfumes and candles. A related plant, (Cymbopogon nardus) is the ingredient in citronella candles sold to ward off mosquitoes and other insects.

Customer Review

They grew!
These are lemon grass seeds for the grass that is commonly used as a seasoning in South Asian cooking. (The Fire Bowl chain of restaurants has a coconut milk soup called Yom Ka which uses lemon grass.)These seeds came up fine, even in 108 degree Austin heat. Start them in a pot of well-mulched, loose dirt that has a clear plastic bag over the top to create a minature greenhouse. (Translucent grocery produce bags will do.) They won't sprout unless they are humid, not wet.I have little green shoots of lemon grass from these. So far, so good.

Pleasantly surprised
Most of the web sources on sprouting and growing lemongrass seeds claim that the seeds are hard to germinate, take over a month to sprout and have a poor germination rate.I was pleasantly surprised when the majority of my seeds germinated within a week of planting. I planted them in a standard seed tray with a moisture dome and placed them in a southern window. They sprouted within a week. The temperatures have been in the high 70, low 80.I am very pleased with this product.

Grew fast, no problems
The lemon grass grew fast (potted inside and moved outside once established). Almost every seed germinated. Highly recommend.

The oils are also absorbed in the fat cells, and when essential oils are used in massage, whether erotic or not, the medicinal components of the herbs are also availed. As I said before, the massage itself, along with the scents, is magical enough, but what I think really makes massage with essential oils so special is the care that is being shown by the masseuse. I personally believe that massage using essential oils is one of the most erotic feelings in life. So, now the nose has picked up on the scents of the oil and it will have less impact, or over the course of an evening the effects of the hormones will dissipate. I believe it wouldn't be too far-reaching to say that nearly every culture at one time or another took advantage of nature's resources and used oils and massage. Endorphines are actually stronger than morphine, which is probably why the word breaks down as "endo", which means "within", and "phin", which means "morphine".
